Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
