The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis forecast his petroleum strategies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – really, no former commander would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

A Battle for the Highest Among Us
