A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural changes.
