The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
